Helping Others by Noel McManus

L.J.Hooker Hallidays Point hosted the Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Council on Friday 25 July. HP Lions provided a BBQ. Thanks to those Lions who were able to assist on the morning. All takings, and a healthy donation from our Op Shop, were passed on to Cancer Research. L.J.Hooker will have the final total figure, which will be over $4000. We were happy to freely contribute our time and pass on $800 to this worthy cause.

Krambach School approached HP Lions seeking assistance to run a BBQ at the Lego Brickfest. In the past it has been organised by Hallidays Point PS but this year it was organised by Krambach PS which is also one of the schools we support. Brickfest took place at Great Lakes College in Tuncurry on Sunday 10 August and was an enormous success. Despite the weather, Lions managed to stay mostly dry and sell plenty BBQ food and drinks. The school was very appreciative of our efforts. The small school raised over $7000 for the day.

The next group being helped will be the HP Pickleball Club on Saturday/Sunday 13-14 September at the Pickleball Doubles Tournament at Wrigley Park, Taree where we will be providing the barbecue.

We continue to pick up furniture and other items and deliver them to flood victims. Several trips have been made to Wingham, Taree and Coopernook. Thanks to the local Hallidays Point community for generously donating these items. We also provide vouchers (e.g., Bunnings) for the victims.

Membership

We have welcomed into membership Michael Nibbs, Robyn Channell and Sandy Mitchell and it was great having them attend the Dinner. Since then, other new members have joined including Cathy Boag, Glenn Mitchell, Jan Thomas, Steve Rawson, Elna Rawson, and Tina Crowther. These people have supported Lions by volunteering at major events or in the Op Shop and we thank them for their support. Inductions will occur at our September Dinner meeting when the District Governor visits the club.

Support Our Students

The Club received information about Camp Getaway, a camp organised by District Lions for students Year 5 to Year 7 who would benefit by having time at camp during the September /October holidays at Camp Elim just south of Forster. In the past we have sponsored two or three students from Hallidays Point Public School. This year the cost per student is $570. Again, the Club has approved sponsoring two students.

The Club has been informed that Nathaniel Newton, a local student attending Taree Anglican College, is one of 26 Australian students selected to attend Space Camp in Houston in October. He has raised half of the $10,000 needed to attend by collecting bottles and cans, mowing lawns, and doing odd jobs. The Club has made an initial contribution of $1000.

Another student, Zahlia Randall has been selected to play in the U18s Indigenous Netball team representing Australia touring New Zealand and Fiji at a cost of $7000. Zahlia attends Great Lakes College. Our Club and FT Lions are seeking further information from her about what support we can give.

Op Shop

The Diamond Beach Rural Fire Service (RFS) is now assisting in the local Community Op Shop on Monday afternoons from twelve until 4pm. Another new group, Hallidays Sports Bowls, is assisting on Tuesdays.

Dinner

At our July Dinner our guest speaker was Jessica Gray who is Chair of the Forster Tuncurry Business Chamber. She spoke about Community Partnerships which sponsor a number of events such as Lakeside Festival, Spring Festival, NRL Voice Against Violence (Schools) to name a few.

Lions Matters

The Club hosted District training on Saturday 16 August at the Surf Club. The training was for new Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers from Clubs up and down the coast. It was delivered by the District Governor, Narelle Peters, and the Cabinet Executive. Our club catered using ready-made food from our local suppliers i.e. The Point Bakery and Foodworks.
